As much as we don’t like to think of it in our neighborhoods, domestic violence can happen anywhere and does. I’ve been working with the Eastside Domestic Violence Program as they change their name to LifeWire!! They just had an awesome auction and gala (KOMO’s Molly Shen was the emcee and was great), where they announced the new name! Please help spread the word so people know where to go for help! Here’s the news release:

Eastside Domestic Violence Program Announces Name Change , ‘LifeWire’ to Represent Continuum of Care for Clients

BELLEVUE, Washington – After 30 years, nationally recognized Eastside DomesticViolence Program (EDVP) is changing its name to LifeWire, better representing its mission of providing safety to victims of domestic violence, and the continuum of care LifeWire provides families on the path to healing.

“We’ve evolved over the years and wanted a new name to reflect who we are now,” said Barbara Langdon, LifeWire Executive Director. “We’re not just on the Eastside. We provide comprehensive services and programs all around the community, and LifeWire is like a ‘lifeline’ for a lot of people who are in an abusive relationship.”

LifeWire is an innovator of highly successful programs, including a 24-hour crisis line, shelters that provide safe housing, advocacy services, groups for children and teens, a Latina outreach program, counseling, and women’s support groups. These programs are critical when you consider that last year, LifeWire answered nearly 11,000 crisis line calls and worked with almost 5,200 local victims of domestic violence. Since 1982, LifeWire has served more than 115,000 victims and their children, helping them escape from abusive homes and relationships.

“This agency literally saved my life,” said Stacy, a LifeWire client who experienced domestic violence. “Without them, I wouldn’t have been able to move into a safe place, find a new job, and help my children heal. It’s made the difference for me from being desperate, to starting a new life and having hope.”

“This is what we do,” said Langdon. “We’ve been providing this full spectrum of comprehensive care all along, and now, with our new name LifeWire, we know that people will better understand the range of services and prevention that we provide.”

LifeWire drives prevention through community-based initiatives to cause change in behaviors and attitudes about domestic violence. LifeWire’s recent World of Hope dinner and auction provided a platform to educate the community about ways to prevent domestic violence and highlighted the continuum of care, raising $400,000 for agency programs.

“We are thrilled with the response from our community, and the generosity of our donors,” said Kelly Becker, LifeWire Development Director. “This is a time for all of us to come together and celebrate the progress we’ve made over the past 30 years. As we move forward as LifeWire, we will continue to look for new and innovative ways to address domestic violence.”

For more information, please visit www.lifewire.org. You can also contact Kelly Becker at kellypb@lifewire.org or call 425-562-8840, ext. 253.

LifeWire (formerly Eastside Domestic Violence Program) is one of the largest domestic violence service providers in Washington state. For over 30 years, we have provided safety to victims of domestic violence, offering a comprehensive range of programs and services that help people regain strength and courage. As an ally, problem-solver and an advocate, we not only assist victims in crisis, we also partner with our
communities to educate our citizens so we can prevent abuse before it happens. Our goal is to create a safe environment for everyone. If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, call LifeWire’s 24 hour Crisis Line at 425-746-1940 or 1-800-827-8840. Visit LifeWire at www.lifewire.org.

Boating season starts this weekend! Margo Myers, Principal, Margo Myers Communications

Crow’s Nest Yachts Named West Coast Dealer for Westcoast Custom Yachts Renowned Boat Builder Forbes Cooper Launching New Models in May

SEATTLE, Washington — Crow’s Nest Yachts is pleased to announce it is now the exclusive West Coast dealer for Westcoast Custom Yachts, located in British Columbia, Canada. Crow’s Nest Yachts is featuring the North American-built yachts at its locations in Seattle, Newport Beach and San Diego beginning in early May.

Renowned boat builder Forbes Cooper is the genius behind Westcoast Custom Yachts. He’s been manufacturing boats since the 1970’s, first with his Cooper sailboat, and then with the Cooper Prowler series of yachts in the 1980’s. Cooper has come out of retirement to put his mark on these new well-crafted yachts.

“Forbes Cooper builds a flawless Northwest cruising boat at a great value – just what we’ve been looking for,” said Vic Parcells, Crow’s Nest Yachts Seattle. “This is a local builder that allows us to take a prospective buyer to the factory near Vancouver, B.C. and back in one day, allowing the buyer to get the perfect boat for them. We struck a deal to represent Westcoast Custom Yachts almost immediately, and could not be happier.”

“We love these guys,” said David Cooper, Westcoast Custom Yachts. “They’re so professional and enthusiastic. They have an attitude you don’t always see in the industry right now. They’re very optimistic.”

Westcoast Custom Yachts features 62’ and 64’ Pilothouse models, combining large interiors, roomy flybridges, and expansive cockpits with impressive performance, dependability and economy. Due in late May is a 64’ model from their new line of low-profile, customizable Express Cruisers, featuring modern European styling.

“We customize the boats to what owners want,” said Forbes Cooper, Westcoast Custom Yachts. “No two boats built over 50 feet are alike, and we show owners mock-ups of features and finishes they request to be certain we meet their approval before we build it.”

Cooper also designed the new boats to be popular with yacht owners who wish to combine cruising and sport fishing, with plenty of cockpit space to add sportfishing chairs, and other accessories.

“These semi-custom designs are perfect for West Coast boaters,” said Dennis Riehl, Crow’s Nest Yachts Newport Beach. “They’re exactly the kind of yacht and price point that works well for either the weekend
boater or serious long range yachtsman.”

Crow’s Nest Yachts maintains a high standard of excellence on the West Coast, and with the addition of Westcoast Custom Yachts, continues to provide exceptional service to exceed expectations of existing and prospective clients.

Crow’s Nest Yachts is marking more than 35 years of service to West Coast boaters with locations in Seattle, Washington, and in California in both San Diego and Newport Beach. Currently, Crow’s Nest Yachts has a wide selection of yachts available, with inventory valued at more than $47 million.

Eastside Domestic Violence Program Marks 30th Anniversary , ‘World of Hope’ Dinner and Auction on May 5th Celebrates Major Change
BELLEVUE, Washington – Eastside Domestic Violence Program (EDVP) is marking its 30th anniversary as one of the premier programs in the nation advocating for victims of domestic violence, and providing services to return them to safety. Its “World of Hope” dinner and live auction on May 5, 2012 at Bellevue’s Meydenbauer Center, promises to be one of the most significant events in EDVP’s history.

“We have such amazing support from the community, and this is one of our largest fundraisers to support our programs,” said Barbara Langdon, EDVP Executive Director. “Not only do we want to fill the Meydenbauer Center to celebrate 30 years of service, but we are making a major announcement that signifies where our agency has been, and where we are headed in the future.”
In fact, Honorary Co-Chairs for the “World of Hope” dinner and auction are no less than Gov. Chris Gregoire and First Gentleman Mike Gregoire. “As Governor, I have seen a dramatic increase in the need for domestic violence services,” said Gov. Gregoire. “I have met with victims, children and families living in fear and hopelessness. For many, even the most basic safety net can mean the difference between life and death.”

EDVP answered 10,716 crisis line calls and worked with 5,179 local victims of domestic violence last year. Since 1982, EDVP has served more than 115,000 victims and their children, helping them escape from abusive homes and relationships. “We’ve seen an increase in traumatic cases, where families are barely holding on,” said Langdon. “The 2012 World of Hope dinner and auction will raise funds that provide critical services to families in desperate need.”

One of EDVP’s clients, Stacy, will share her story during the dinner about domestic violence in her family. After years of physical and emotional abuse, Stacy reached a new low when her husband kidnapped her oldest son, and took him to another state. The mother of three, and now a college student, gives EDVP credit for literally saving her life and those of her children. “Without the services of Eastside Domestic Violence Program, I don’t know how I would have survived or kept my family together,” said Stacy. “This program has forever changed my life.”
This year’s dinner and live auction on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the Meydenbauer Center, 11100 NE 6th St. in Bellevue, will be hosted by KOMO news anchor Molly Shen. Auction Chair Brinette Rounds promises a sensational evening, beginning with a VIP reception, then a gourmet dinner paired with fine wines, followed by dancing. “We will be encouraging high-energy bidding on fantastic travel destination packages, unique getaways, and other items not otherwise available for purchase,” said Rounds. “We give special thanks to our supporters whose generosity will create a World of Hope for victims and families in need. Join us for this memorable evening!”
To register for the ‘World of Hope,’ please visit edvp.maestroweb.com, or call Tiffany Solack at 425-562-8840, ext. 249. Tickets are $150 per person, or a table of 10 is $1500. For more information, please contact Kelly Becker, EDVP Development Director, at kellyb@edvp.org, or call 425-562-8840, ext. 253.
####

EDVP is the largest provider of domestic violence services and confidential shelter in North and East King County, Washington, and is a nationally recognized leader in the field. Since 1982, EDVP has provided safety, support and access to education and training for more than 115,000 victims and their children. It marks the 23rd annual ’Kids Are Our Business’ Breakfast for the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center. It never ceases to amaze me what tremendous support KCSARC receives from people in the community, elected officials, prosecutors and victim advocates, and I have to say — I’m proud to be a part of it. Sexual assault and abuse has no place in ANY community. And I am inspired by the survivors who display their courage, sharing their stories and how they’ve overcome such difficult crimes against them.

This breakfast was my 10th year emceeing this event. It has grown over the years, and I think this year was one of our best efforts. There is progress being made, and all the support over the years is driving that progress. KCSARC is on the front line of serving survivors, helping shape public policy, and starting the conversation in order to end any stigma associated with sexual abuse and assault. The goal was to raise $375,000 and we are close! So far, people have contributed $366,000 to KCSARC from this year’s breakfast, and I am confident the goal will be reached.

Congratulations to ED Mary Ellen Stone, Alix Compton, Jeff Pyatt, and the rest of the KCSARC staff for a job well done! And thanks to Jennifer Richard Photography for the photo!

If you’re in marketing — whether it’s for yourself, or your company, you’ll want to keep a close eye on what Nike is doing. Whether you love or hate the ‘swoosh’ — you have to give the company credit for being a trendsetter when it comes to marketing their brand. And in the newest evolution of advertising — Nike is going non-traditional. Instead of ‘commercials’ and traditional ads, Nike is going where its customers are – building online digital communities and leveraging its relationships with customers (read: communities) that in turns, sells products.

Check this out — excerpted from the article linked below: “Nike spent nearly $800 million on ‘nontraditional’ advertising in 2010, according to Advertising Age estimates, a greater percentage of its U.S. advertising budget than any other top 100 U.S. advertiser. (And Nike’s latest filings indicate that that figure will grow in 2011.) It’s hired scores of new engineers to make technology for online communities (Digital Sport has grown from 100 to 200 employees in the past six months and has moved into a larger space on the outskirts of campus). And the brand has overhauled its $100 million-plus campaigns around major events like the World Cup and Olympics to focus on online campaigns first. The result? Before, the biggest audience Nike had on any given day was when 200 million tuned in to the Super Bowl. Now, across all its sites and social media communities, it can hit that figure any day.”

You can guess — with the Olympics coming up, you’re only going be reading more about Nike, and maybe even using your Nike app that keeps your workout on track!

http://management.fortune.cnn.com/2012/02/13/nike-digital-marketing/?section=magazines_fortune.

Full disclosure — I just bought Nike shoes — ‘Free’ and they are like slippers. You can’t even tell that you’re wearing them when working out!

We attended last night’s opening night, expecting to see old friends, learn about new boat models, cool things we need on the boat, and generally wander around amongst the crowd. It lived up to expectations.

Of course, being SeaRay owners, we always stop to say ’hello’ to our friends at Lake Union SeaRay, including Steve Thoreson, take a look at the new boats, and I will say the 390 looks great — with a large cockpit seating area, a center transom entrance, and fewer sharp lines below (I like smooth edges). The new 500 is impressive, but if I’m moving into that league, I’ll likely be looking for something a little more fuel efficient. The best thing, and another friend who owns a boat model just like ours, agreed — we like the boat we have. The model works especially well for a couple — not too big, but large enough to have friends aboard, and also stay on the boat for a week or so if we want.

Then it was into the booths, where we said ‘hi’ to Recia Weigelt of Cleaner Cook! She sells just the thing boat owners who grill on their boats need to protect their gel-coat. Plus, she also has this killler barbeque sauce with a number of different flavors. Commodore Greg Dore’ heads up the Tyee Yacht Club, and they are one of the few clubs adding members. We also learned they’ve added a new outstation at Port Hadlock thanks to a generous club member! Sue Hicks, over at Sea Magazine, is a must-see, and the magazine is a must-read for boat owners in this area with the latest news on new boats, cruising grounds, new products, and industry updates. We did pick up our new Waggoner Cruising guide, and said ‘hello’ to founding editor Robert Hale, as well as new editor Mark Bunzell, who filled us in on some of the latest legislative news from Olympia regarding the boating industry. (The Northwest Marine Trade Association is a great resource for the last news on this front). In fact, I had them both autograph our new guide!

Back onto the floor, we stopped by to say ‘hi’ to Niel Steenkamp, of Ocean Alexander and now Tiara boats. OA just keeps building bigger and bigger yachts, and they’re beautiful. (Thank goodness for their floating boat show at Roche Harbor, where I worked from the flybridge of the 65′ OA to get an internet connection last summer)! And finally, we stopped by Greg Norwine’s booth, Windworks, where I learned what it would take to get my captain’s license. (Start logging sea-time now)! We could wander for days among all the different booths, looking at all the new products, and drooling over the cool electronics that are out there now. And when I really want to dream, I head over to the floating show on Lake Union to check out all the yachts. Maybe one days I’ll have one of these! (see photo below).
