Update!!! I just heard from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Washington, and it seems ‘Congratulations’ are in order. They met their goal — even exceeding it, bringing in $60,000+ from people who want to invest in their community and their children. Way to go!
Thanks to Big Brothers Big Sisters in Olympia! I was honored to emcee their 7th Annual BIG breakfast this morning, at which 450 people got up early to hear about, and invest in a great organization. I’ve worked with Patricia Hart, the BIGS Development Director, for years at various agencies, and I know she always puts on a top-quality event!
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a mentoring organization that can change a child’s life! Becky, a 5th grade teacher, is the Big Sister to Mariela, a 10 year old sweeheart of a girl who loves science. They both spoke eloquently of their relationship, the activities they do, and the difference it’s made in both of their lives. In fact, Becky compared it to the Grinch (from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”) when his heart grows and grows at the end of the story. She says her heart has grown, and Mariela has been a true gift and someone fun to share with. It’s hard to put a price tag on that, and the difference it will make in Mariela’s life. (Mariela spoke of her hope of a Big Brother for her brother, to have the fun kinds of experiences she’s having with Becky, and I’m sure it won’t be long before a match is found).
Community support is tremendous. There were a number of elected officials and dignitaries in the audience this morning, as well as business leaders who support Big Brothers Big Sisters! The theme of this event was ‘Start Something’ and if you can start a relationship and change a life — it’s worth it!

Margo,
Thank you so much for being our emcee for the BIG Breakfast yesterday and doing such a great job. You helped inspire our guests and created a warm atmosphere for their generosity.
Thanks also for putting the event and Big Brothers Big Sister information on your blog.
I wish you continued success in all you do and your very worthwhile causes that you work so hard for their success.

Roger,
It was my pleasure! You have a wonderful organization, and I’m pleased everything turned out so well. Of course, I always enjoy working with Patricia, but I was pleased to meet you and some of your other team members. I wish you much success in 2011!
